Question by Emmy Jo: Advice on purchasing a crib and other nursery furniture?
Even if you can’t answer all these questions, I’d be interested in hearing whatever advice you do have.
I’m beginning to reckon about decorating our nursery, and I want to initiation off by buying the furniture. I’d like to get some advice on where to initiation from people who have already decorated their nurseries.
1. What crib brands are considered most safe and reliable? Which ones are a excellent value for the money? Any suggestions on fantastic places to shop?
2. Are here any point features we should look for in a crib?
3. Should we buy a crib new or used?
4. Do you recommend getting a changing table and dresser separately (so we can use the dresser even when our son is older)? Or should we get a changing table/dresser combo piece (fewer pieces to buy = less expensive now)? We are plotting on having more kids, and we have siblings who also plot on having kids, so anything we’re done with can be passed on to them.
5. Are here any nursery items you consider a “must have”? Anything you bought but don’t use and consider a waste of money? (e.g., mirrors, diaper stackers, hampers, etc.)

we got a new crib but we never use it. I recommend co-sleeping, if you’re not against it. it can be done safely. or you can have my crib =] anyways, try looking for companies that have never had a recall.
I recommend just getting a dresser and not using a changing table. my son, at 4 months, could have roll off it if he had tried. I always change him on the floor now, you can’t fall off the floor. they’re verrrry wiggly once they figure out how to go. if you want a changing table, get one that’s separate from a dresser if you plot on passing it down. then your baby can just use the dresser and you can pass down the changing table.
you do not need — a diaper stacker (we use baskets and bins), fancy diaper garbage can, or a wipes radiator. I’d recommend a white noise machine or a fan to block out some noise, a regular garbage can with a lid for diapers, and a mobile. I made one — at target they have things like this:

low-cost and you can change the cinema. hang it over the changing table.
other than that, lots of baskets to separate their modest socks, hats, onesies, booties, wash clothes and the like.

1. I got mine at Burlington Coat Factory really and they have a lot of fantastic cribs, so if here is one near you I’d defiantly suggest looking here. 2. I was told (and read) that the drop sides can be a safety issue so we went with sationary ones, but it really depends on the crib. Also I reckon the adjustable matress height is super nice; the convertable cribs are super nice as well, Rhylens will go from crib to kid to day to full size. But they’re a modest more expensive.

4. I would go changing table/dresser combo because it is cheaper now and then you can initiation saving for a real dresser and have plenty of time to get it. But its less space for clothes, unless your son has a excellent size closet and you can hang a lot of it up.
5. A wipe radiator!!! They are soooo nice!! When I change Rhylen upstairs where we don’t have the wipe radiator she squirms and is kind of fussy but when we’re in her nursery and I’m using wipes from the radiator she lays super still and doesn’t have any problems. Hampers are excellent too so you don’t have a pile of clothes and you don’t have to remember to grab the dirty clothes every time your in here. A glider is super nice just to have in the nursery so you don’t have to go to the living room to rock them and they initiation to learn that the nursery is where they sleep, once their older that is. A bassinett if you don’t have them is fantastic especially for the first few weeks when your still super sore and are trying to adjust, this way the baby is right here in your room and close by. I can’t really reckon of anything in her nursery that I bought and don’t use, though I’m sure that as soon as I turn off the computer and go check on her I’ll find a touch

I don’t know much about point brands, but I would strongly recommend getting a crib that converts to a kid bed – This saves space and money – - The only reasons I would not recommend a convertible crib are (1) you plot on having more kids, plot on handing down the crib, and want them 2 years apart-ish (2) Want to transition from crib to full-sized bed – - Currently, both our nearly 3 year-ancient and our 5 year-ancient are in kid beds. I want to transition them to a bunk bed, but also want to wait until my youngest is a modest older (we have a limited space issue)
As for used vs. new – I would only get a used one if I knew who it was coming from or if I bought it from a place I trusted (and then only if I did my research and checked that it wasn’t recalled!)
At this point, my opinion of the changing table vs dresser would depend upon how/where you plot on using it… We used the changing table because we had a hand-me-down from my sis-in-law… If I were to do it over, I reckon that I would use my huge, long, sturdy dresser as the changing table and let it do double duty…
I breastfed both of my boys, and considered the Boppy essential along with a preside over in their room to sit at – Plus, hubby used the Boppy to make bottle feeding more comfortable for him and both boys used it for tummy-time and sitting – This was one piece of equipment that I used multiple times a day and often packed with me!
Other useful items were the swing (my eldest loved it – my youngest was ho-hum), the bouncy seat (ex. http://www.amazon.com/Bright-Starts-Bouncing-Followers-Cradling/dp/B001134IL2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1250496487&sr=8-1 – my youngest loved it and my oldest was ho-hum!) – - Both items I would suggest that less is plenty… The swing we used two speeds only and the bouncy seat we rarely used trembling (but this is a figure that might be useful with some babies), and the diaper genie (just anything to help limit the smell!)
Other then that, I might recommend the Bumbo seat – but that isn’t for use until a few months ancient – - We didn’t need it with our first, but it would have been real nice with our second…
Many of the baby items are going to depend on what works best for you and your house/situation and what temperament your baby has… does trembling sooth, or would he like to rock, etc… Does he want to sit up, or is he fortunate rolling around, etc…
Overall, here is no right answer to anything – just do what works best and is best for you and your family

A touch crunchy hannah said reminded me – we had a small fountain in our son’s room to make white noise (it also served as a dim set alight when I went in to check on him). We also have a CD player in their room and sometimes use it for playtime music, and sometimes for sleeptime music – this has been in since they were babies (and sometimes I would use it to play my music while reassuring a irritable baby!)
And we used a lot of baskets to sort blankets, diapers, creams, etc. into – They were always straightforwardly available and simple to sort…
1. I don’t really know any brands or shops in your area. Wretched.
2. I’d say look for one with a sturdy frame and one that doesn’t possess any dangers to the baby, say, if it rolls over, he won’t fall out or knock a touch and break it.
3. I’d say a new one. With a used one, even if its been checked, it may not last as long. And besides, I reckon its kinda special to have a new crib.
4. If you have the money, I’d recommend getting them separately. Like you said, when your son is older you can still use it. If you are a bit strapped for cash, then go for the combo and passing them down is a excellent thought.
5. I’d say to always have the stuff you listed. I don’t reckon mirrors are that necessary, but diapers are the most needed. I reckon having a few spare baskets/boxes around would be helpful, in case you need to store a touch somewhere.
I would absolutely buy your crib and car seat new. Everything else, we bought used or ridiculously low-cost. We got a separate changing table, because we found one on clearance at Kmart for $5. It isn’t the prettiest, but it has extra storage bottom, and I can use the top of the dresser for his books. I also found four matching dressers at Goodwill for $10 each, so we use one dresser in our office, one as a nightstand in the guest room, and two dressers are in James’ room. One is out in the room itself, and we keep a lamp on it, with current clothes in it. The larger one we really place in his closet, and keep too-huge clothes and future toys in it.
We took a low-cost behind the door mirror, twisted it sideways, and place it over the changing table to entertain James while he’s being changed. I didn’t like diaper stackers, I just bought blue fake bins and filled them with diapers under the changing table. I like the modest fake hanger on one side of the table, because it holds the wipes container in simple reach, but out of the way.
A glider was essential for us. I really use the one my mother used for me as a baby. It’s hideous, but it has a lot of memories for us. I covered up the bottom with a simple white blanket, and covered the top with my baby blanket. My baby blanket is too fragile for him to play with, but it was the color inspiration for the room. It’s part of our bedtime routine. We come in, change his diaper, sit and hang out for a couple of minutes, maybe end a bottle, then it’s in the crib.
Speaking of the crib, we loved our modest set alight-up seahorse. It sounds cheesy, but it’s basically a cute gloworm from our childhoods. It stays in the crib, and only gets twisted on for sleep, which helps James know when it’s playtime in his room, and sleep time.
A picnic basket is really really really essential. We just used a low-cost white one, but when our guy has a blow-out, it’s so nice to have a fake container to toss the sheets and clothes in and haul it down to the basement. I thought about a nicer looking cloth one, but the sheer amount of nasty messes make them impractical because you have to wash the picnic basket with the messy stuff!
